Questions
What does a fire re-inspection cost?
Across 7 published flat re-inspection fees, the charge runs from $30 (Moore, OK) to $200 (Creve Coeur, MO). The median is $100.
When is a re-inspection fee charged?
When work or a building fails an inspection and the fire marshal has to come back, or when a permit's included inspections are used up. Some schedules charge from the first return visit, others only from the third. Each row below quotes the schedule's own wording.
Is the re-inspection fee the same as what the fire protection company charges?
No. The fee goes to the city, county or state fire marshal for the return visit. The licensed company that fixes the problem and services your sprinklers, alarm, extinguishers or kitchen hood bills you separately.
How do I avoid a re-inspection fee?
Fix every item on the inspection report before you ask for the return visit, keep current service tags on extinguishers, sprinklers and hood systems, and have the report from your licensed company ready. Our guide to a failed fire inspection walks through it.

Method
- Source: the fee schedules on our fire marshal fees page, each read on the issuing city's, county's or state's own site. A fee is used only when its words and amount were confirmed on the document; schedules we could not confirm line by line are left out.
- A row is a re-inspection fee when the schedule names it as a re-inspection or an extra inspection. The amount is as printed, including a schedule's own spelling of the figure.
- Lowest, median and highest use flat dollar amounts only. A rate billed by the hour is listed but not counted, because its total depends on the visit.
- This is not a sample of every fire marshal in the country. It covers the 7 schedules we have read so far, and grows as we read more. Data last built October 7, 2026.
