How to dispose of a fire extinguisher
A fire extinguisher that still holds any pressure or agent goes to a household hazardous waste (HHW) site or a fire equipment dealer, never the trash. A fully emptied unit, with the head removed, is accepted as scrap metal or garbage in some places and refused in others, so check your county's rule. Halon units must go to a dealer or recycler for halon recovery under EPA rules.
Charged or partly used extinguishers
King County, Washington accepts full or partly full extinguishers at its hazardous waste collection sites, up to 7.5 gallons per container and 5 tanks per trip.
Hillsborough County, Florida tells residents to bring extinguishers to a household hazardous waste collection site and not to put them in the trash or recycling. Its sites do not take business waste.
The San Mateo County fire department in California says an extinguisher that is not completely empty counts as hazardous material and must never go in the trash, because the pressurized contents could explode.
Cambria, California, which uses the San Luis Obispo County hazardous waste sites, says those sites take up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit free of charge.
Many fire equipment dealers will take an old unit. Longview, Texas notes that its fire department does not collect extinguishers, and that many fire equipment dealers can recharge or dispose of them.

Emptying an extinguisher yourself
Where no hazardous waste program takes extinguishers, several agencies describe how to empty one first. Do this outdoors, away from people, pets and cars.
Cumberland County, Pennsylvania says to pull the pin and squeeze the handle until nothing comes out, let the unit sit for 2 to 3 days, test the handle again, then remove the head and mark the cylinder EMPTY.
San Mateo County Fire and the Prosper, Texas fire department give similar steps: release the pressure by spraying a small amount into an open area and let the canister sit for a few days before disposal.

Empty extinguishers: rules differ by place
What happens to a fully emptied shell depends on where you live, and the official answers conflict:
- San Mateo County Fire (CA): remove the head and recycle the head and cylinder at a drop-off site that takes ferrous metal such as steel.
- Cumberland County (PA): once nothing else comes out, remove the head and take it to a scrap metal recycler or put it in the trash.
- Prosper (TX): if no hazardous waste program takes extinguishers, an emptied unit may go in the regular trash.
- King County (WA): empty extinguishers can go in the garbage but are not recyclable.
- Cambria (CA): never put an extinguisher in the garbage, even if you think it is empty, because it could explode in a garbage truck.

Dry chemical, CO2 and halon
Dry chemical (ABC or BC) units: the Prosper fire department says these usually lose their charge after a partial use, so a used unit should be serviced or treated as spent.
CO2 units: the same guidance says CO2 and halon extinguishers generally keep their pressure after a slight discharge. Treat a used CO2 unit as still charged and take it to a hazardous waste site or a fire equipment dealer.
Halon units: EPA rules forbid venting halon during testing, servicing, repair or disposal. Proper disposal means sending the unit to a manufacturer, fire equipment dealer or recycler for halon recovery. Do not empty a halon unit yourself.
Very old units: Cumberland County warns that extinguishers made before 1960 may contain carbon tetrachloride and should be handled with care.

Businesses
Household programs often exclude business waste. Hillsborough County's sites refuse commercial waste. King County accepts extinguishers from eligible small businesses that bring a completed disposal form, up to 25 gallons or 220 pounds per trip and four visits a year.
A fire equipment dealer is the other route for businesses: Longview, Texas notes that many dealers can recharge or dispose of extinguishers.

Common questions
Can I throw a fire extinguisher in the trash?
Not if it holds any pressure or agent. A charged or partly used unit is treated as hazardous material. Some places allow a fully emptied unit with the head removed in the trash, and others do not, so check your county.
Where do I take an old fire extinguisher?
A household hazardous waste site or collection event, or a fire equipment dealer. Call your fire department only to ask where to go: some departments, such as Longview, Texas, do not collect them.
Can fire extinguishers be recycled?
Sometimes. San Mateo County Fire says an emptied cylinder and head can go to a ferrous metal recycler. King County, Washington says empty extinguishers are not recyclable there.
How do I dispose of a halon fire extinguisher?
Send it to a manufacturer, fire equipment dealer or recycler for halon recovery. EPA rules forbid venting halon during disposal.
How long should an emptied extinguisher sit before disposal?
Cumberland County, Pennsylvania says 2 to 3 days, then test the handle again to be sure no pressure remains.
